La Cinematheque Youtube: The Ancient Film Student’s Dream

September 27, 2012

If you could have told some of those film students 40-odd years ago that the films they were paying $2 (silver coinage) to see once in the theatre, they could, two score hence, see over and over for just the cost of their internet service, they wouldn’t have believed you. But that is the current reality on youtube and various other archives that have large stores of films in the public domain.

Never has the student of cinema had such an array of films to choose from, and one could, in the course of one twenty-four hour period, see all or most of the major works of countless great cineaste “auteurs”. The French were really the ones to push the “auteur” theory, that films are the direct and sole inspiration of one man, the director-writer, instead of the insipid Hollywooden-American factory technique (you can’t call it a theory) of churning out exactly what it knew it would take to bring them into the boxoffice. The “auteur” theory was prominent in Italian Cinema too, and in Svensk it was manifest in Ingmar Bergman. (Svensk cinema is where they take flickas to the flickers). In Hollywood, only a few survived the factory-production rigidity, like Hitchcock, but most were soon forgotten, as are most good technicians.

In Britain, one gets the feeling it was a combo of auteur and studio demands. But starting in the late fifties, it certain feels like films were becoming the expression of the director as auteur more than a puppet on the strings of the producer. However, everywhere, even in Europe, those who chose to go their own way often had horrendous problems financing their movies, like a compulsive gambler who has suckered so many friends out of money, he can no longer raise a stake. Welles and Fellini both had this problem sucking energy out of their creative drives. Welles bitterly described it as having to put 99% of his creative energy into raising money from producers and put only 1% of it into actually creating the film. We can only imagine what would have been produced if he could have put 100% into his films.

Paradoxically, we could say that there are now so many important movies that the serious film student “must” see, that if he were to see them all, his entire life would pass in the movie theater, and his lack of real life experience would make him unable to empathetically respond to the situations that arise in the film. Film is a veritable opium den where hundreds-of-millions, perhaps billions, of human beings live away their lives, watching a real-seeming fantasy that could never actually occur to them, especially in a socialist society that crushes and fragments the energy of the individual into a thousand superficial directions, and leads to a life lived in lines, dealing with bureaucrats.

Still, there have been so many amazing films made, one cannot but admire the medium as a vehicle that can say so much, almost everything, although it can never duplicate the interior thoughts and reality that a writer of fiction, especially in the first person, is capable of. Film can never express subjectively all that writing can, but no writing can duplicate the cinema’s specific moulding and manipulation of the viewer’s consciousness by the film maker so that they see only what he wants them to see, by his directing their attention. Writing is a dream created by the writer, but seen differently in the mind’s eye by every individual reader. Film is a dream in which everybody sees exactly the same images, but whose emotional reaction in the viewer always differs. (Though notice how, in intelligent discussion of a film, two different people can share the same subtle perceptions as to style or effect that show hardly any difference.)

Whether the film student should watch films at all, or start virgin with only the images in his head to guide him, and never let any other influence him (or even make films without ever having seeing a motion picture or operated a camera, as in the anthropological experiment of Worth and Adair’s, conducted in 1966, in which they gave cameras to a group of Navajos and asked them to film whatever they wanted from their own perspective, in order to learn how certain cultures look at things, something that never could be gleaned from just making films of the people in these cultures)— this is a decision that now few can make given the almost immediate stationing of the tot in front of the television or DVD player. Even the government schools are getting into the act, robotizing the brains of the small children in front of the computer screen, so that those brains can quickly become mechanical and uncreative, and fodder for that “high-paying job” that will never exist.. Soon there will be no unspoilt individuals.

But given the popularity of film, and its amazing possibility of letting us see Shakespeare’s Globe anytime, anywhere, and in any form we like, and for not even that while-a-way-a-shilling Shakespeare charged, we know that people are not going to give up this new form of crack cocaine, invented such a short time ago. And for those who want to study the past milestones of this medium, there never has been such an amazing school and campus of Film Studies as youtube, the cinematheque in a box on your desk.

Mrs. Clinton Proposes $2.3 Billion for Egyptian Arab Nazis

September 22, 2012

In one of the most dastardly deeds Silverwolf can recall the Obama Administration doing, Ms. Rodham, our Madam Secretary of State, proposed yesterday that America give $2.3 billion U.S. taxpayer dollars to the Arab Nazi regime in Egypt known as the Muslim Brotherhood. This outrage, of Americans being forced at jailpoint to turn over their hard-earned money to a Nazi regime, is a deed that stinks to high heaven. But Ms. Clinton made it with her usual bored droning face, as if it were only another crime in a long list of Human Rights abuses she and her husband have participated in, be it aiding the mass murderer and torturer Suharto in Indonesia, giving Most Favored Nation trading status to the slave-labor nation of Red China, even while it continued to subject and enslave the Tibetan People and Nation and persecute the great tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, or merely standing by in Rwanda while 800,000 civilians, mostly women and children, were hacked to death with machetes, a la Jimmy Carter in the face of the Criminal Idi Amin in Uganda. With such a record, giving $2.3 billion to the Egyptian Nazis must have seemed like small potatoes to the former Reagan Cowgirl.

Nor was she deterred from giving this huge sum to a new regime whose leader, Mohammed Morsi (or Mursi), recently attended the nuclear power conference held in Tehran hosted by the Fascist Criminal and Child Murderer Ahmedinajad. You can be sure that pretty soon we’ll be hearing calls for the development of “Egyptian nuclear power for peaceful purposes”, and then, once they have the reactors, the need for “an Egyptian bomb”. Hitler’s plan for killing the Jews is alive and well in Cairo, and evidently Mrs. Clinton has no fear that in giving yet another $1.3 billion dollars to the Egyptian military, she is putting weapons in the hands of Middle East Nazis.

The connection, nay identity, of the Muslim Brotherhood to the Nazi Third Reich has been well-documented by longtime anti-Fascist historians Dave Emory and John Rothmann, and invaluable evidence has been added in the last decade by fearless former Justice Department Investigator John Loftus. (Try googling “banna nazi”.) In brief, the Muslim Brotherhood was formed in 1928 by Hasan al-Banna, an Egyptian religious extremist who loved Adolph Hitler, corresponded with him, and established the Brotherhood as the Nazi wing of the Arab Movement. This movement was furthered by al=Banna’s close friend, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, another Arab Nazi who instigated riots against Jews in then Palestine, and formed an SS Unit of Bosnian Muslims during the war. Now, 84 years later, the Muslim Brotherhood Nazis finally come to power with about 26% of the eligible Egyptian voters approving them. (Another wonderful example of “democracy in action”.  We always thought democracy meant at least 50.00001% of the eligible voters approve of something? Evidently not in Mrs. Clinton’s definition of the term.)

(We should further add that we do not agree politically with the three above historians and researchers, who all sound like they are probably Franklin Roosevelt Democrats, but that does not invalidate the accuracy and easy confirmation of the facts they record in their histories. Indeed, Silverwolf thinks there is probably much validity in Emory’s concept of the “Bormann Underground Reich”, a post-war funnelling of the funds the Nazis looted before and during WWII into major Western corporations. Emory theorizes a parallel development occurred with the vast amount of gold looted by the Japanese working its way into major corporations, many of them Japanese. The roughly 20,000 Nazi War Criminals brought in by one wing of the CIA under Truman, Loftus posits, basically became the dominant force in the old CIA, and in Reagan’s term they were brought into power, and continued under Bush I. Loftus seems to have a much higher regard for the current CIA whom he described once as a good bunch of people. Emory’s and Loftus’ theories and speculations seem to make great sense to Silverwolf as explaining many events that have occurred since WWII.

However, the fact that these three historians could get their facts so right but get their analysis of economic reality so wrong well illustrates Professor Murray Rothbard’s point that one of the great problems in economic analysis is that most good economists are lousy historians, and most good historians have absolutely no inkling of what the Austrian School of Economics (i.e. pure Capitalism) really is, i.e. they’re lousy economists. The above three historians well illustrate this fact.)

And after their coming to power, Obama gets on the phone and congratulates these Nazis, in effect legitimizing them in the eyes of most unaware Americans and the entire world, as if such a highly educated person didn’t know their background history. And now, tragically, Mrs. Clinton proposes giving these Nazis another $2.3 billion, so as to secure their hold on power.

The insanity of this proposal, to arm the enemies of America and Israel who share the ideology of  the Nazis and Al-Qaeda, shows the utter failure of Obama’s appeasement of the Arab Fascists all throughout his term, and he and Mrs. Clinton’s utter failure to understand the serious damage done to America by these giveways to Nazis. Instead of starving the beast, they are feeding it, and with your food, American Public.

And as for Ms. Rodham’s heinous proposal, Silverwolf says: not one cent of U.S. taxpayer money to the Egyptian Arab Nazis!

Fascist vs. Fascist vs. Gary Johnson

September 10, 2012

So the election, as Silverwolf could see on May 17th, when he mailed in his re-registration going from a Republican (thankfully briefly) back to a Libertarian, — the election was going to come down to a contest between the two Fascists and Gary Johnson, and that is just what we have in September. Two milquetoast Fascist candidates, representing the two largest parties in America, and Gary Johnson, representing the Jeffersonian-Libertarian pro-Capitalist people in America, many of whom were formerly supporting Congressman Ron Paul’s candidacy.

Now, one may think Silverwolf exaggerateth when he calleth the brethren “two Fascists”, for Fascist conjures up the image of a jacketbooted thug dressed in State Black or Brown, laying into a protestor with his baton before having him sent to a concentration camp, or that strutting jackanapes Mussolini, who finally met a just end, giving one of his histrionic orations. But technically the term is accurate, because it’s founder, moosejaw Benito, defined Fascism as “corporatism”, or an alliance between the State and the major corporations (or all corporations) within the State. The bailouts of GM and AIG and the banks that were failing, and the Solyndra half-billion dollar rip-off, are textbook examples.

So calling Obama and Romney “Fascists” is accurate, although it may not involve the actual horrendous Civil Rights violations that were perpetraited under the European Fascists before and during World War II. Still, Obama is still arming the Indonesian Army Government Death Squads that murder, torture, and terrorize the populace of Papua. Radio Australia and the A.B.C. (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) have recently done some excellent documentaries on the murder of Papuan non-violent political activists, funded by that trio of moral bankrupts, President Obama, Julia Gillard, and former British PM Gordon Brown. These three were and are (we don’t know if PM David Cameron is continuing this vile policy) confiscating their taxpayer’s money to fund a reign of terror in Papua, in effect turning every taxpayer and every silent citizen in these countries into an accessory to murder. (And notice they are all “Liberals” in the current American sense of that word.)

You could have bet Obama would gang up on the defenseless peasants of Papua to curry favor with the immoral Indonesian Government. Anything for a buck over principles with that sort of politician, just as he’s done in Red China where the reign of terror and cultural genocide continues in Tibet, with the blessings and tolerance of the Prez and Ms. Rodham-Clinton. How can the American people vote in such enablers of terror?

With Romney, we already know that he is going to emulate the “Liberal Republican” views of his father as far as the Fascistic wedding between government and business. And on assaulting Civil Rights, Romney could well outdo the shameful Obama record. Either way it will be an Imperial Presidency and four more years of the Degeneration of America.

The one alternative for Libertarian-oriented Americans is former Govenor Gary Johnson of New Mexico. While no Ron Paul, he’s close and congruent to many and most of Ron Paul’s positions, and the experience of being Governor of a State for eight years means he could move into the White House with a certain ease. Americans like Governors who have governed well, and Johnson, a Libertarian-Republican or the other way around, was elected and reelected in a state that is heavily Democratic in registration.

An informal survey of 1,000 former Ron Paul supporters was very recently conducted by one of the Daily Paul’s fixture bloggers. (The Daily Paul is a website that has been running during Ron Paul’s campaign for several years. It is a locus point for news, clips, and views on the campaign which is now kaput.) This survey found that 66% of the thousand respondents were going to vote for Gary Johnson, as is Silverwolf, 16% were going to write in Ron Paul, even though they thought their vote would not be counted or attributed to Dr. Paul (i.e. “others” in the polling totals), and only 6% said they’d vote for Romney.

About a month back, a political observer for the Libertarian magazine, Reason, was predicting that a third of the Ron Paul vote would go to Johnson and the other two-thirds to Romney. We thought this was well off the mark, as we felt, from reading the mood, that Johnson would pick up two-thirds of Dr. Paul’s votes, since their policies were so similar at core, with one-third going to Romney in a “stop Obama” or “the lesser of two evils” justification. Looks like Silverwolf got the latter part of that call wrong. The 6% only going to Romney has nasty implications for his electoral chances. As we said in our last blog, dissing Ron Paul and his supporters at the convention, when they were treated like dirt, could well cost Romney the election. Romney blew his chance at winning outright two months in advance of the election when he dissed the Ron Paul movement. Some chess players like to turn won games into losses.

So that’s your choice. A Fascist versus another Fascist versus Governor Gary Johnson.

You pays your money, you takes your choice.
